Before We Begin

Who this handbook is for and what to know before buying a printer.

This book is not about buying a printer and getting rich the next day. It is about avoiding a printer that gives you a second job instead of an income. A very stressful second job.

I work in DTF printing, and I treat it as a production business first. I need the equipment to print, orders to go out on time, and quality to stay consistent regardless of the printer's mood that morning. So you will find fewer glossy sales pitches here and more discussion of what actually affects the work: film feeding, ink, humidity, settings, maintenance, and the value of your own time.

From the outside, DTF looks simple. Print the artwork, apply powder, cure it, and press it onto a shirt. But there is a substantial amount of knowledge between "it worked once" and "it works equally well every day." That is what we are going to discuss.

I am not trying to convince every reader to buy a printer. Quite a few of my customers tried printing in-house and then went back to ordering finished transfers. That was the better financial decision for their businesses. The opposite happens too: someone learns the process, builds a reliable operation, and earns good money printing their own transfers.

The purpose of this book is to help you understand the difference between those situations. And, if you do decide to manufacture transfers, to reduce the number of expensive lessons you have to pay for yourself.

We will start with the basics. Then we will do the math, work through the printer options, and look at the small details that turn DTF into either a useful production tool or an ongoing technical soap opera.
